What is Soye?
Soye are the dried seeds of the dill plant. Indian dill (Anethum sowa, also written Anethum graveolens var. sowa) has slightly longer, more aromatic seeds than European dill. The fresh leaves of the same plant are the green soye ka saag, called shepu in Marathi.
Soye is not soybean. Many people search for "soya seeds" meaning dill seeds, but soybean (soya bean) is a different plant: a round, protein-rich bean. Soye are thin, flat, oval seeds with a pale ridged edge.

Soye vs Saunf, Jeera and Ajwain: how to tell them apart
| Seed | Look | Aroma |
|---|---|---|
| Soye (dill) | Flat, oval, light brown with a pale winged edge | Fresh, slightly sweet, mild caraway-like |
| Saunf (fennel) | Larger, plump, green to pale yellow, ridged | Sweet, strongly aniseed |
| Jeera (cumin) | Thin, elongated, grey-brown, ridged | Earthy, warm |
| Ajwain (carom) | Very small, round-ish, grey-brown | Sharp, thyme-like |
| Shahi Jeera (black cumin) | Thin, dark, curved | Smoky, sweet |
Traditional uses
- After-meal digestive: chewed like saunf, or taken as soye ka pani (dill seed water). Soye is traditionally valued as a carminative, a herb that helps relieve gas and bloating.
- For new mothers: in many North Indian and Maharashtrian homes, soye goes into panjiri, laddoos and ajwain-soye water in the weeks after delivery.
- In the kitchen: used in achaar (pickles), dal and sabzi tadka, breads and Punjabi and Kashmiri dishes.
- In classical formulas: Shatapushpa appears in traditional Ayurvedic preparations for digestion and women's wellness.
These are traditional uses, not medical claims.
How to use Soye
- Soye ka pani (dill seed water): soak 1 teaspoon of seeds in a glass of water overnight, or boil for 5 minutes. Strain and sip warm.
- After meals: chew ½ teaspoon of roasted soye, alone or mixed with saunf.
- Powder: ¼–½ teaspoon with warm water, or mixed into ladoo and panjiri.
- Cooking: add whole seeds to hot oil for tadka, or to pickle masala.
