Sat Ajwain | Ajwain Extract | सत अजवायन

Sat Ajwain | Ajwain Extract | सत अजवायन

Ajwain extract aids digestion and relieves bloating. It also has antimicrobial properties.

Sat Ajwain (सत अजवायन) — also called Thymol Crystals or Ajwain Phool — is the purified, crystalline extract of ajwain (carom seeds) (T. ammi). Unlike whole ajwain seeds, Sat Ajwain is a concentrated white crystalline substance composed primarily of thymol, the principal active compound in ajwain. It has a much stronger, sharper aroma than the whole seed and is used in traditional Indian home remedies for digestive complaints and as an antimicrobial agent. Dhanyawad Ayurved stocks Sat Ajwain in 10g packs at ₹50 and 100g packs at ₹425.

What is Sat Ajwain?

Sat Ajwain is not simply ground ajwain seeds. It is the extracted, crystallised thymol obtained from ajwain through steam distillation of the seeds. The result is a white or pale yellowish crystalline powder or small flat crystals with an intensely sharp, phenolic, menthol-like aroma — far more potent than whole ajwain. Thymol is a naturally occurring monoterpene phenol recognised in traditional and modern pharmacopoeia as an antimicrobial and carminative compound.

How to identify genuine Sat Ajwain

  • Appearance: white to pale yellowish-white flat crystals or fine powder — not grey or dirty brown.
  • Smell: intensely sharp, penetrating aroma resembling a concentrated version of ajwain and thyme — the smell should be immediate and strong even from a distance.
  • Solubility: dissolves readily in alcohol; only partially soluble in water.
  • Taste test: a tiny amount (pinhead size) on the tongue produces an immediate strong numbing-warming sensation — do not taste larger amounts.
  • Watch out for: yellowed or dark crystals suggest oxidation or old stock; weak aroma means diluted or impure product.

Traditional uses of Sat Ajwain

In Indian traditional practice, Sat Ajwain has been used in the following ways:

  • Digestive gas and bloating: a very small amount (2–3 crystals, approximately 50–100 mg) dissolved in warm water with a pinch of black salt has been used as a traditional remedy for trapped gas and bloating.
  • Toothache and oral disinfection: a tiny crystal placed near an aching tooth for temporary relief is a traditional home remedy; thymol is also a well-known antiseptic ingredient in commercial oral care products.
  • Inhalation for congestion: 2–3 crystals added to a bowl of hot water and inhaled (steam inhalation) is a traditional remedy for nasal congestion and chest tightness.
  • Antiseptic skin wash: dissolved in alcohol or water, used to clean minor cuts or to reduce scalp itching.

These are traditional household uses. Sat Ajwain is highly concentrated — always use in minute amounts.

How to use Sat Ajwain

  • For digestion: 2–4 crystals (about 50–100 mg) dissolved in ½ cup of warm water with a pinch of black salt (kala namak). Sip slowly. Do not exceed this amount.
  • Steam inhalation: add 4–5 crystals to a bowl of freshly boiled water, drape a towel over your head and inhale the steam for 5–10 minutes. Keep eyes closed.
  • Tooth/oral use: a tiny crystal (no larger than a sesame seed) may be held near an aching tooth area — do not swallow and do not use repeatedly without dental care.
  • Maximum daily amount: do not exceed 200 mg (approximately 8–10 small crystals) for any internal use. Sat Ajwain is highly concentrated — more is not better.

Large doses are toxic: consuming more than 500 mg can cause nausea, vomiting, headache and in rare cases more serious effects. Keep strictly away from children. Do not take internally without knowing the correct amount. People with ulcers, liver disease, kidney disease or who are pregnant should not use Sat Ajwain internally without consulting a doctor. If you have any ongoing health condition or take medication, consult your doctor before using this product. If you experience burning, nausea or dizziness, stop use immediately and seek medical advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ajwain sat?

Ajwain sat (Sat Ajwain) is the purified thymol crystal extracted from ajwain (carom seeds, T. ammi) by steam distillation. It is the concentrated essence of ajwain — much stronger than whole seeds and used in tiny amounts for digestive, antimicrobial and inhalation purposes.

How to use ajwain sat?

For digestive discomfort, dissolve 2–4 tiny crystals in half a cup of warm water with black salt and sip slowly. For nasal congestion, add 4–5 crystals to a bowl of hot water and inhale the steam. Always use very small amounts — it is highly concentrated.

Can we drink ajwain tea daily?

Whole ajwain seed tea (a teaspoon of seeds boiled in water) is a traditional daily digestive drink that is safe for most healthy adults. Sat Ajwain (the extract) should not be consumed daily in the same way — it is much more concentrated and should only be used occasionally and in minute amounts.

What are the side effects of ajwain?

Whole ajwain seeds in normal cooking amounts are very safe. In excess, they may cause heartburn or acidity in sensitive individuals. Sat Ajwain (thymol crystals) in large doses can cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness and liver toxicity. Never consume more than 200 mg of Sat Ajwain in a day.

Are ajwain seeds hot or cold?

Ajwain is considered ushna (hot/heating) in Ayurveda — it increases digestive fire (agni) and is traditionally recommended in cold, damp conditions or for people with sluggish digestion. People with excess pitta (acidity, heartburn) should use it sparingly.

What is the price of Sat Ajwain?

Dhanyawad Ayurved sells Sat Ajwain in 10g packs at ₹50 and 100g packs at ₹425. The 10g pack is sufficient for several months of household use, as the typical dose is just 2–4 tiny crystals at a time.
