What is Arshkuthar Ras?
Arshkuthar Ras (also written Arsh Kuthar Ras or Arshakuthar Rasa) is a classical Ayurvedic preparation described in texts such as Rasendra Sara Sangraha. "Arsh" means piles and "kuthar" means axe, so the name means "the axe for piles". It belongs to the rasa group of medicines, which are made with purified minerals and metals.
Published versions of the formula differ slightly, but they generally include:
- Minerals and metals: shuddha parada (purified mercury), shuddha gandhak (purified sulphur), loha bhasma (iron), and tamra bhasma (copper) or abhraka bhasma (mica)
- Herbs and salts: danti root, trikatu, suran, bilva, chitrak, tankan, yavakshar and saindhav lavan; one version also lists shuddha vatsanabha (processed aconite)
- Processing liquids: cow's urine and snuhi latex
The usual adult dose quoted is about 125–250 mg, once or twice a day, as decided by the prescribing vaidya.

Which one should you choose?
If your Ayurvedic doctor has prescribed Arshkuthar Ras, take it exactly as prescribed and don't swap it on your own. Rasa medicines contain processed minerals and need a professional to set the dose and duration.
If you want a herbal option to support digestion and regular, easier bowel movements alongside diet changes, a herbal capsule like Arsh Kuthar is the simpler choice. Pair it with more fibre and water, as explained in our piles diet guide.
When to see a doctor first
Don't rely on any medicine without an examination if you have:
- bleeding from the bottom, especially if you are over 40 or it keeps happening
- dark, black or tarry stools
- severe pain, or a lump that won't go back in
- a change in bowel habits lasting more than 3 weeks, or weight loss
These can have causes other than piles. Our guide to piles stages explains when each stage needs medical care.
